ADMIN: A quick FAQ with the creator of the Artemis quiz. If you’re not inclined to read it, then you can jump straight to the quiz by clicking on terms and conditions.
What is Artemis?
I’m afraid I can only answer your question with a question:
In a world where biology is no longer a reliable signifier of gender, and trenders can wake up and identify as any gender they want, how can anyone be sure what gender they are?
I suppose you have the answer:)
Yes, I do: by using Artemis – the only means by which you can discover your true gender
You see, Artemis is the oracle of gender. The wee on a stick pregnancy test of gender. Definitive. 100% scientific. It’s so accurate that you can just print out your result and from that moment on everyone will accept that you are said gender. That’s ‘passing’ right there… just with a simple piece of paper.*
(*While we take Artemis very seriously and are constantly researching the model that underlies it… it is primarily for fun. Yes…fun! Remember that!)
Can you give me a more serious answer please?
Yes, Artemis is a personality test designed to evaluate whether you have a predominantly male or female personality, and, if so, to what degree.
I started with a light-hearted explanation because, obviously, a test like this is fraught with scientific, sociological, and political challenges.
Scientific: We don’t have hard empirical evidence defining what constitutes female behaviors, ideas, or emotions. We only have certain statistical trends, and even those aren’t overwhelmingly convincing.
Sociological: Even if we can identify distinct personality traits, there’s no way to be sure they aren’t just socially constructed and could easily change in five years or vary in different cultures.
Political: Some radical feminists may be convinced that there is a distinct difference between male and female personalities, while others may find it problematic to suggest any clear distinction at all. Either way, somebpody ends up screaming at us.
So given such difficulties, why did you create the personality test?
I think it’s one of those rare times in my life where I just prefer to go with intuition. Female intuition, rather than science. I just don’t give a f what the scientists or sociologists or politicians say, it’s just obvious that men and women are different.
So I decided to do a comprehensive review of all the latest research on the topic and design a quiz that would essentially identify whether someone had a male or female personality. But, recognizing the limitations, I’ve always been upfront from the beginning that the test isn’t 100% scientific and should never be taken as a definitive measure of someone’s true gender.
Still, I stand by the test, and I’m always working to improve it.
Okay so can you tell us briefly what the methodology is?
The methodology is very straightforward. I basically went ona far ranging quest to discover every source of information in society about differences between men and women. These include studies of…
- 20th century work on the “Big Five” personality traits (agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, openness).
- The new generation (21st-century) of experiments on gender differences.
- Research on consumer habits and gender preferences.
- Political /philosophic/ cultural leanings across genders.
- Lifestyle studies examining how men and women live their lives.
Using that research, I developed 25 questions that allow the quiz algorithm to draw conclusions about your gendered personality.
That sounds reasonable, but I’m guessing there was still some pretty big design problems?
Ye. For example, let’s say we examine assertiveness. We might find that 60% of men are rated as assertive, but we also discover that 40% of women are as well. So, we can’t definitively say assertiveness is a “male” trait—it simply occurs more frequently in men.
Again and again in gender difference studies we find a high degree of statistical overlap in certain behaviours, This significantly complicates the ability to denote a personality male or female.
So how did you solve that problem?
Well, I obviously didn’t solve it… or I’d be famous for creating a watertight personality test for gender. But I think I did a pretty good job.
The key lies in going outside of the traditional academic studies and looking for more unusual and quirky sources. But I don’t think I need to go into more detail because you can just see the questions yourself.
Great, so how can I do the test?
Like Femscore, this is a prettyinthecity.me project. so click on the terms and conditions below and you can do the test over at my website.
